Most people who give up on natural deodorant did not pick the wrong brand. They picked the wrong formula for their skin. This is a plain guide to how natural deodorant actually works, what the ingredients do, and how to tell which of our two formulas is right for you.
Does natural deodorant actually work?
Yes, when the formula is right. Here is the part nobody says out loud: natural deodorant is not one thing. The results swing wildly depending on what is in the stick, and a lot of people quietly conclude that natural deodorant does not work when really one specific formula did not work for them. So the real question is not whether to go natural. It is which formula fits your skin.
Magnesium hydroxide vs baking soda: which one and why
This is the single most useful thing to understand about natural deodorant, so here it is plainly.
Baking soda is a powerful, time tested odor neutralizer. It works by raising the pH at the surface of your skin, which makes the environment hostile to the bacteria that turn sweat into smell. It is highly effective. The catch is that same alkalinity. For some people, regular use of a baking soda deodorant can leave the underarm irritated or itchy, especially on sensitive skin.
Magnesium hydroxide solves the same problem with a gentler touch. It also neutralizes odor by nudging skin pH, but it is far less alkaline than baking soda, so it tends to be much easier on sensitive skin while still holding up through a normal day. If baking soda has ever left you red or sore, magnesium is almost certainly your formula.
Neither is better in the abstract. Baking soda leans toward maximum odor control. Magnesium leans toward gentleness. You are choosing based on your skin, not on which is stronger.
Deodorant vs antiperspirant: the part that trips people up
Antiperspirant uses aluminum compounds to plug your sweat glands so you stop sweating. Deodorant does not stop sweat. It manages odor and absorbs moisture while letting your body do its normal thing. Ours is deodorant, aluminum free, so expect to still sweat. You just will not smell.
That difference matters, because if you are switching off an antiperspirant, your body goes through a short adjustment of a few days to about a week while it recalibrates. That adjustment is normal and it passes.
What is actually in a good natural deodorant
A natural deodorant has three jobs: neutralize odor, absorb moisture, and stay kind to your skin. Here is what does each job in ours.
Odor control
This is where the two formulas differ, and it is the whole reason we make both. Baking soda in Natural, or magnesium hydroxide in Sensitive, does the heavy lifting against odor.
Moisture absorption
Arrowroot powder pulls moisture without clogging your pores, with corn starch added in the Natural formula. Food grade plant starches, nothing gritty.
Skin support
Coconut oil and shea butter keep application smooth and your skin comfortable. Beeswax holds the stick together. Scent comes from essential oils and natural extracts, no synthetic fragrance.
Our two formulas, one page
Both are plastic free, aluminum free, and packed in a compostable Kraftboard tube. They live on the same product page, so you can pick your formula and scent in one place.
Natural Formula (Baking Soda)
Our original. Maximum odor control for people who have not had trouble with baking soda before, or who simply want the strongest natural option. Goes on smooth and feels familiar.
"The only natural deodorant that works for me and doesn't have an obnoxious smell. Please never stop making it!!!"
Sensitive Formula (Magnesium)
Baking soda free, built on magnesium hydroxide for sensitive skin. Trusted by people who had given up on natural deodorant after irritation or inconsistency with other options.
"Love the smell. Lasts all day from work to barn. And most importantly it doesn't irritate my skin."
Which formula is right for you?
Choose Natural if you want the strongest odor control and your skin has handled baking soda fine before. Choose Sensitive if you have sensitive skin, baking soda has irritated you in the past, or you have tried natural deodorant and it did not quite work.
