You've probably noticed the laundry aisle hasn't changed much in thirty years. Giant plastic jugs, heavy shipping weight, ingredients you stopped reading a long time ago. You use one, it empties, you buy another. Repeat forever.
Laundry strips change that completely. A single strip about the size of a breath mint sheet dissolves in your wash and does exactly what a full jug does. No plastic. No water weight. No measuring. Just drop it in and go.
The category has grown fast, with brands like Tru Earth, Earth Breeze, and Blueland leading the charge. But there are two things most of them get wrong that nobody talks about enough. We will.
Here's everything you need to know about laundry strips in 2026, including an honest look at how the options compare on ingredients, packaging, and price.
Why Laundry Strips Are Worth Switching To
Conventional liquid laundry detergent is roughly 90% water. You're paying to ship water across the country in a heavy plastic jug that almost certainly ends up in a landfill. Laundry strips flip that model entirely. The detergent is ultra-concentrated and pressed into a thin dissolving sheet.
The case for strips
No plastic jug. Paper packaging only, fully recyclable or compostable.
Dramatically lighter shipping. A month's supply fits in an envelope, cutting transportation emissions significantly.
Pre-measured. No pouring, no guessing, no overuse. Tear off a strip and drop it in.
HE compatible. Low-sudsing formula works in all washing machine types, hot or cold.
Smaller storage footprint. Fits in a drawer instead of under the sink.
Problem One: The PVA Issue
Almost every strip on the market uses polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as the dissolvable film that holds the detergent together. That includes Tru Earth and Earth Breeze.
PVA is a synthetic polymer derived from petroleum. It dissolves in water. But "dissolves" and "biodegrades" are not the same thing. Research has raised concerns that PVA breaks down into microplastics under the conditions found in most U.S. wastewater treatment facilities, which typically don't have the specific temperature and biological environment required for full PVA degradation.
We originally sold Tru Earth strips because they were manufactured nearby in British Columbia. Then in May 2025, Tru Earth moved production to China. And as we dug deeper into the PVA research, we didn't like what we found. So we built our own formula from scratch, manufactured right here in Oregon, with no PVA.
Problem Two: Most Strips Skimp on Enzymes
Enzymes are what actually break down the stains that matter. Without them, a detergent can handle surface-level dirt fine. But a sweaty gym shirt, a grass-stained knee, or last night's olive oil? That's where enzyme-light formulas fall short.
Tru Earth sold enzyme-free strips for years. Some of their newer formulas now list a single protease enzyme blend. Earth Breeze includes protease and amylase, which is a genuine improvement. Blueland's tablet includes enzymes too. So does ours.
Our strips include three targeted enzymes chosen specifically for the stains real laundry actually produces.
The enzyme lineup
ProteaseTargets protein-based stains. Sweat, blood, grass, food residue.
AmylaseCuts through starches. Pasta, sauces, gravy, cereal.
CellulaseHandles grass and plant marks. Keeps fabric fibers fresh and bright.
TogetherA balanced blend that lifts stains thoroughly without being harsh on fabrics.
If you're washing lightly soiled clothes, almost any strip will perform. If you're washing actual laundry. Gym clothes, kids' clothes, work clothes. What's in the formula matters a lot more.
The Contenders
Tru Earth Eco-Strips
Tru Earth. The brand that popularized laundry strips.
Packaging: Cardboard sleeve. No plastic.
PVA: Yes.
Enzymes: Historically none. Some newer formulas list a single protease enzyme blend.
Manufacturing: Moved to China in May 2025.
Price: $16.99 for 32 sheets (up to 64 loads at half a sheet per regular load). Roughly $0.27/load.
Tru Earth built this category and deserves credit for it. Cardboard packaging is genuinely plastic-free, and the per-load price has come down. But PVA is in the formula, the enzyme bench is thin, and production moving to China adds a concern for buyers who care about where things are made.
Earth Breeze Laundry Sheets
Earth Breeze. The most affordable strip in this comparison.
Packaging: Cardboard envelope. No plastic.
PVA: Yes.
Enzymes: Yes. Protease and amylase.
Manufacturing: Core products made in Kentucky. Other scents made in Canada.
Price: $20 for 1 pack (60 loads, half sheet per regular load). $0.33/load. Lower on subscription.
Earth Breeze is one of the cheapest options here and they've added enzymes to the formula, which matters. Still contains PVA. If budget is the primary filter and PVA isn't a dealbreaker, it's a reasonable choice. The gap between theirs and ours on price is real and worth knowing about.
Blueland Laundry Tablets
Blueland. PVA-free tablets with a strong enzyme lineup.
Packaging: Compostable refill pouch. Requires industrial composting, not home compost.
PVA: No.
Enzymes: Yes. Five enzymes: protease, amylase, mannanase, cellulase, pectate lyase.
Format: Tablet, not a strip.
Manufacturing: USA.
Price: Refill packs are $21 for 60 loads = $0.35/load. New customers start with the Forever Tin kit, which makes the first purchase cost more than the refill price suggests. Available on Amazon and in retail stores.
Blueland takes the formula seriously. PVA-free and a deep enzyme bench is a solid combination. The tradeoffs worth knowing: the tablet format is slightly more friction than a strip, the compostable pouch requires an industrial composting facility, and the first purchase with the tin costs more than it appears from the refill price alone.

Enzymes: Yes. Protease, amylase, and cellulase.
Format: Strip. Tear, drop, done.

Where to buy: Only at sfsustainable.com. Not on Amazon. Not in big-box stores.
Earth Breeze and Tru Earth are cheaper per load. We're not going to pretend otherwise. If price is the only thing that matters, they win that row.
What you're getting with ours: a strip-format detergent that is PVA-free and enzyme-powered, in paper packaging you can compost at home, made by a small independent brand in Oregon that owns its own formula and doesn't sell through Amazon. That combination doesn't exist anywhere else in this category.
The Honest Price Comparison
All prices are one-time purchase at entry pack size, verified June 2026. We're the most expensive per load in this lineup. We'd rather show you that than hide it.
$0.39/load on subscribe. PVA-free, three enzymes, Oregon-made.
Lower on subscription. Contains PVA.
New customers start with the Forever Tin kit, which costs more up front than the refill price suggests.
Contains PVA. Made in China.

How to Use Laundry Strips
It's as simple as it sounds
Regular load: Tear off half a strip and drop it into the drum before adding clothes. That's what we use for our own family's laundry.
Large or heavily soiled load: Use a full strip.
Cold water: Works fine. Dissolves fully in all temperatures.
HE washers: Fully compatible. Low-sudsing formula won't cause overflow or residue.
Tough stains: Wet the strip and rub it directly on the stain before washing, or pre-treat with a stain stick as you normally would.
When you're done: Compost the paper packaging. That's it.
Our strips are hand-cut, so they can vary slightly in size. Cleaning power stays the same.
