What is tooth powder, and is it better than toothpaste?

Tooth powder is one of the oldest ways to clean teeth, brought up to date. Instead of a paste held together with water, binders, and a plastic tube, you get the active cleaning ingredients in dry form. For our powder that means calcium bentonite clay and calcium carbonate to gently polish, baking soda to clean and freshen, and xylitol, which is naturally sweet and a favorite of dentists.

Better is a matter of priorities. Tooth powder wins on ingredients and waste: no plastic tube, no synthetic foaming agents, nothing you cannot pronounce. Toothpaste wins on familiarity and, in most cases, added fluoride. If fluoride matters to you, our Unpaste tablets include it. If a clean, plastic-free routine matters most, the powder is your answer.

How to use tooth powder

Toothpowder

Dip a damp brush into the powder, swirl gently, and brush. The charcoal version looks bold while brushing but rinses completely clean.

Tablets

Chew one lightly, brush as usual, and rinse. Dry, compact, and TSA-friendly.

Does the toothpowder have fluoride? +

No. Our toothpowder is fluoride-free. If you want fluoride, the Unpaste tablets include it.

How long does the toothpowder last? +

About 150 to 200 brushes per tube. Most people get 2 to 3 months out of one.

Is tooth powder safe for enamel? +

Yes, when used as directed. Our powder uses gentle polishing minerals, not harsh abrasives. Brush lightly, let the powder do the work, and it cleans without scrubbing at enamel.

Will the charcoal stain my sink? +

No. It looks dramatic while brushing but rinses completely clean.

Is the packaging compostable? +

Yes. Both the toothpowder tube and the tablet pouch are fully compostable. No plastic in either.

Mint Unpaste Tooth Tablets

We love these tablets. Convenient and so easy to use. Very good minty taste. I have purchased several packages of these and will not go back to tube toothpaste. And I love that I am not throwing away a plastic tube that ends up in a landfill.

Jury still out of the product from Mexico.

Hi Janet, the Unpaste Tooth Tablets are the only product we sell that isn't a Silver Falls Sustainability Co. product. We offer them because we wanted to offer customers a zero waste toothpaste replacement with fluoride. Our toothpowder doesn't have fluoride, and the Unpaste packaging met our sustainability standards.

While the tabs used to be made in Germany, Unpaste moved their production to Mexico. We had no control over that, and are unsure if they are still making tabs in Germany.

Mint Unpaste Tooth Tablets

These are convenient and work well...but they have changed the formula recently and the older version was much better. The new one crumbles more whereas the previous version crunched easily into a smooth paste. The new version is also very foamy...a bit much for my taste though others may like that. I do really appreciate that there is no xylitol in them...dog safe!

Perfect powder!

I tried a few different tooth powders before finding this one. I'm not a fan of charcoal, and appreciate that there's a version available without. It's not too sweet, and the metal tin makes it easy to apply to my toothbrush. I'll never go back to traditional toothpaste!

Not minty enough, but works well

I tried both kinds, and neither have much of a minty flavor at all. I wanted to love it but it just doesnā€™t leave my mouth with that minty fresh feel. That said it works well to clean my teeth and I like the no waste packaging. Itā€™s a good product, just not a fit for me personally.

Disappointing

I ordered the toothpowder without activated charcoal. Unfortunately, I am not pleased with this toothpowder and will not be purchasing again. The taste is very unpleasant. However, I do enjoy the eco-friendly container it is in. It also lasted me about a month which is great timing. I also ordered a lip balm which is perfect! I just struck out with the toothpowder.

I have tried both the charcoal and the non-charcoal tooth powder. I love them both. The charcoal is very dark so I use it in the shower only to avoid staining my sink. The normal powder has a spearmint taste which I enjoy. I also feel I have seen a difference in the whitening of my teeth over the past month. I think it is easy to use and would recommend it to others. I am definitely sticking to this product!

I've been using this for a month now, and it's working great! The container is easy to open and secure, and I've noticed my teeth have gotten whiter. I'm not a big fan of mint, so I love that the spearmint is not too strong. It gets my sink pretty black, but I don't mind! Great product, amazing shop!

I bought the charcoal tooth powder and I love it. It gets a little messy sometimes when I'm trying to put it on my toothbrush but it is well worth it to have the compostable packaging. Doesn't have a terrible taste, but it also isn't as on your face minty as store bought paste. My teeth are definitely whiter after a few weeks of use as well. I recommend to everyone!

Is bentonite clay in powder form too abrasive? I'm worried about damaging my enamel. Does mixing the powder with something like coconut oil make it less scratchy on teeth? Or would that not make a difference?

Our supplier of bentonite clay does recommend oral care as one of its uses. That said, it's always good to consult your dentist! If you mix the toothpowder with coconut oil it will be more like a toothpaste.

Is this safe for kids to use? They tend to swallow some toothpaste when we brush their teeth. What does the toothpaste taste like?

The toothpowder taste unique! We use xylitol and spearmint essential oil to give it a minty, sweet taste. There is also baking soda, which tastes salty but that doesn't come through as much. The other ingredients are flavorless. As new parents ourselves we really appreciate your question if it's safe for kids. The main two ingredients, bentonite clay and calcium carbonate, are often used as supplements. The others are baking soda, xylitol, essential oil, and activated charcoal (if you choose that option). That said, we don't recommend any of our products "for kids." We aren't pediatricians, and would recommend you speak to yours before letting your children use this product.
