What matters more than the wash count
A shampoo bar is a format, not one formula. Different bars use different cleansing ingredients, oils, butters, proteins, and conditioning ingredients. That changes how they lather, rinse, and feel on your hair.
Water matters too. A bar that is great for one person can feel heavy or coated for someone else, especially when water hardness changes. So we would not choose a shampoo bar because one brand promises 80 washes and another promises 60. Choose the formula you are most likely to actually enjoy for those washes.

The easier jump from liquid shampoo
Premium is our concentrated formula and generally feels more familiar if you are coming straight from bottled shampoo. It lathers readily, and the formula is less sensitive to water chemistry than Original.
The lineup is targeted without getting ridiculous: Mango-Orange for regular or oilier hair, Grapefruit Volumizing for more body, and Lavender-Plum for blonde or grey hair. Grapefruit also includes hydrolyzed rice protein.

Original
Larger, lower-priced, and still a favorite
Original is the formula we started with, made with plant oils and butters including coconut, olive, castor, sunflower, jojoba, rice bran, and cocoa butter. It is a much larger bar and starts at a lower price.
Some customers simply prefer the way Original feels on their hair. It can be more sensitive to hair type and hard water, which is one reason Premium is usually the easier starting point if you are unsure.

Ethique is one of the most established names in solid hair care, and its U.S. shampoo-bar lineup is extensive. When we checked, standard bars were $14 with options aimed at scalp care, clarifying, volume, shine, curls, smoothing, hydration, repair, purple toning, gentle cleansing, and strengthening.
The formulas vary by bar. For example, Ethique’s Volumising bar uses sodium coco-sulfate, SCI, decyl glucoside, cocoa butter, and other ingredients. Read the ingredient list for the exact bar rather than treating every Ethique bar as the same formula.
Best fit: you like choosing from a large, mature lineup around a very specific hair goal.
HiBAR: best physical bar design
HiBAR’s shampoo bars were $14.95 when checked, with lines including Maintain, Volumize, Moisturize, Soothe, and Curl. Maintain uses SCI as its primary cleanser alongside shea butter, glycerin, honeyquat, kukui nut oil, vitamin B5, and other ingredients.
Its most obvious differentiator is physical: the angled bar is made to stand upright so it can dry between uses. HiBAR also keeps its longevity language conservative, saying a bar lasts at least as long as a 24 oz bottle of liquid shampoo.
Best fit: you want a concentrated solid shampoo and really like the stand-up storage design.
Kitsch: best if you want a whole beauty ecosystem
Kitsch sells a large shampoo-bar range at around $16 for many formulas, including Rice Water, Castor Oil, Tea Tree & Mint, Rosemary & Biotin, Purple Toning, Ultra Sensitive, Coconut Oil, Argan Oil, and Detox.
Its Rice Water Shampoo Bar uses SCI plus sodium methyl cocoyl taurate and carries one of the biggest longevity claims in this comparison: up to 100 washes when used at the specified approximate amount per wash.
